Known world-wide
as simply "the Santa Fe," the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway
came into its namesake city in 1880.
The 120 year-old spur from Lamy to Santa Fe, the
vintage railcars, and the charming California mission-style depot
at 410 S. Guadalupe St., combine to make a charming slice of history.
Every year, tens of thousands of visitors come to see, photograph
and paint the old Santa Fe Depot and ride the train along the original
high-desert route that carried early tourist adventurers, settlers,
artists and scientists into the city.
For many visitors, the railway is the only thing
they know about Santa Fe before they come here: they hum the 40's
swing song "The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe," and they point excitedly
to the familiar Santa Fe herald, the blue cross in the circle.
Since 1992, this rail line continues as the
Santa Fe Southern Railway,
a piece of living history - still carrying passengers through the
high-desert beauty which is our home, and still carrying freight to
serve the community. Like the Plaza, the Santa Fe Southern Railway,
with its terminus at the old Santa Fe Depot, is an authentic, irreplaceable
link to our City's colorful past.
When you come to ride the Santa Fe Southern, you'll
enjoy visiting the historic depot and gift shop where you'll find
many books about the railroad and its history as well as t-shirts,
toys, posters, train sets and memorabilia.

Parking
at the Santa Fe Depot
Santa Fe Southern Railway's
parking has changed as a result of on-going Rail Yard development. A walkway
will soon be built that will eliminate the current "Train Parking
Only" spaces in front of the Depot. Two handicap spaces will remain
there once the walkway work is completed in November 2008.
The best parking
option on Tuesdays and Saturdays is to park in the new underground parking
structure next to REI. It should cost $2.00 for the whole day; specify
that you are attending the Farmers' Market.
We are working on getting spaces
for our Train Depot in this structure--please be patient while we iron
out the details!
On Sundays, visitors can park
in the Tomasita's parking lot (but only on Sundays when the restaurant
is closed) free of charge.
Metered
spaces are available on the streets near the depot. You do not have to
feed the meters on Sundays. Elsewhere, the central pay stations will be
in effect starting sometime in November 2008.
Please talk to our friendly reservations staff if you need further assistance
with parking.
Lodging in Santa Fe
If you are planning a trip to our community, there are plenty of lodging options within a short walk or drive from the Depot. Hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts abound, as well as scenic campgrounds on the city's outskirts.
There are also vacation
timeshares available.
Renting a timeshare is a great option if you are visiting with a large
group or with young children, as they offer more space and flexibility
than typical motel rooms. Many of the timeshare resorts in Santa Fe are
also conveniently located within walking distance of the city's many museums,
galleries, restaurants and shops, and within just minutes of recreational
attractions like the Santa Fe National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains.
